West African Folk Tale
The Gift of a Cow Tail Switch
http://www.storyarts.org/library/nutshell/stories/gift.html

Summary:
A father went out to hunt in the African wilderness. He did not come back and was presumed dead after a few days. Everyone except his youngest son gave up hope. Each day the youngest son asked, “Where is my father?” Three of his other sons were magicians and they went out to look for their father’s body. They find his spear and some bones. They bring back the father from the dead. Upon his arrival back to the village, the father said that he would give a gift to the son that did the most to bring him back to life. The youngest son receives the gift because he never let the memory of his father die.

This story shows how close many of the African families are. Although many African men do not live long lives, their children keep their memory alive by talking about them. In many areas, African families do not have many material possessions so family is extremely important.
